Kindergarten Buddy Book Project
In this project, our entire team worked in groups with children in the Kindergarten. They chose whichever animal they were interested in from a specific list of animals native to San Diego, and we would create a book page with information about that animal. The pages would then be collected and made into a book for the class to publish and show off in an exhibition. It was a great opportunity to create community between such different social groups, young children and teenagers, and I think most people enjoyed working with the kids.
First Draft
I drew this first draft, and my colleague Andrew wrote the informational poem. Nic had thought of the idea of having our turtle sitting upright, and I went from his idea and drew my interpretation. We went with this cover.
Coloring
I was quite excited to color in the picture. I had ideas of what I wanted it to look like and so I offered up to take that job. Using GIMP and my portable drawn tablet, I colored it in like a coloring book. I also removed the font so it could be added in bolder later. Here is the picture before we added text and vectorized it:
Final
From here, my group member took the wheel and added font and cleaned it up. I was proud of how ours came out. It's simple, somewhat cartoony, and yet still slightly realistic: perfect for an educational children's book!
